He explained this at the latest Google SEO office hours at <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GAZ6j00geMk?feature=shared&#038;t=970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4:10 p.m<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gary was asked, &#8220;How does Google handle special characters like the superscript e in search results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For example, a Latin letter E with an acute like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.seroundtable.com\/440px-latin-letter-e-with-acute-svg-1703078931.png\" style=\"max-width: 100%\" alt=\"440px Latin letter E with sharp Svg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gary said &#8220;if these characters aren&#8217;t showing up correctly in search results, it&#8217;s likely caused by a discrepancy between what Google&#8217;s algorithms detected as the character encoding for your page versus what you intended to use &#8220;. <\/p>\n<p>So in this case Gary said &#8220;you should specify the encoding in your HTML using the meta element and its chars attribute&#8221;.
